A great run from the Mixed Team falls just short in All-Ireland Final!!
It turned out to be a bitter sweet couple of days for our Mixed Foursomes Team at the All-Ireland Finals in Castlebar Golf Club as their fantastic journey came to an end with a very narrow defeat to Tullamore Golf Club in the final of the I Need Spain sponsored Irish Mixed Foursomes Final 2017 on Saturday, 9th September.
They got the weekend off to a great start after winning their Semi-Final in such style against Ulster Champions, Malone Golf Club on Friday, 8th September, that they were in bonus territory whatever happened in the Final.
In that Semi Final, played in challenging conditions, with the weather testing the players and supporters at times, it was Adare Manor that put the first point on the board as Tony Davern and Ina Desmond ran out comfortable winners over the mother-son pairing of Linda & Paddy Dean of Malone. Never behind, the Manor pair ended the match on the 13th green with a 7&5 win.
It was perhaps no surprise that Davern and Desmond coasted home with such ease. The pair have won five out of six matches in the campaign. Team Captain Padraig Mann was thrilled with their leadership: “They’ve been out in front all year, I don’t think they’ve had to go past the last five holes in any of their matches in the past year. It’s great to get one early match in.”
Down the order there were also wins for Alan Purcell & Antoinette Meghan and in the the bottom match Deirdre Keating and Brian Murray (pictured) extended their unbeaten run with a 3&1 win to seal victory for Adare Manor.
So onwards and upwards to the All-Ireland Final, and on a day that started wet and windy, the sun emerged on Saturday as the first point of the day was won by Matthew Grehan and Fiona Flanagan for Tullamore with a comprehensive win over Alan Purcell and Antoinette Meghen by 5&4.
Our side squared things as Tony Davern & Ina Desmond ran out winners on the final green beating the Tullamore pairing of Eoin Marsden and Richelle O’Neill by 2 holes.
Martin Darcy and Eilish O’Connell added a second point for Tullamore with a win over Martin Hayes and Breda Naughton before Eoin Moran and Phil Mann levelled things again for us with a 2&1 win over Eoin Flanagan and Emily Donohue.
The drama was left to unfold in the final match as Adare Manor’s heretofore unbeaten Brian Murray and Deirdre Keating faced Colm Cassidy and Cait Cooney.
The Tullamore pair went ahead very early and took a commanding four hole lead around the turn. Despite the best efforts of Murray and Keating the damage inflicted early on was too much and victory was sealed for Tullamore in front of a thronged gallery on the par-three 16th green next to the clubhouse.
Once again, huge credit must go to the management team of Padraig Mann, Margaret Hickey and Katherine McNamara for the way rotated the squad all year to such great effect. And a final word must go most of all to our fantastic squad of players and their caddies for their skill and commitment to the cause all year and for representing our club with such distinction. They have all played their part in bringing a Munster Pennant back to display in our clubhouse forevermore, and there’s not many in our club that can claim that accolade. Well done one and all.
